yep have the same thing drives allocated to usb stay lit up and on whilst the wd tv unit is powered off. but im in a pickle now at the moment with my remote not working at all and trying to get a universal replacement is a bugger

try a system reset, I had the same problem. Also if it starts out turning off the drive and starts to turn it back on and eventually not even turning it off, reset fixes that as well.
